Woodward and Lothrop. Sounds like the name of a law firm right? Think again. Using my mom, and Wikipedia, as my main sources of information, Woodward and Lothrop was the first major department store chain in Washington D.C. The grand opening of the first store was in 1887! "Woodies," as my mom affectionately recalls it, having worked there while attending college at the University of Maryland, was a competitor of Macy's and Lord and Taylor. Unfortunately, Woodward and Lothrop went bankrupt in 1994. Its remaining stores were sold to the Hect Company and Lord and Taylor.
While shopping at Metro Center in Washington D.C. this past October I saw this sign for Woodward and Lothrop on the corner of a building. (Sadly the building is now home to...Forever 21!) I snapped this photo for my mom as a happy reminder that the name Woodward and Lothrop still lives on in Washington D.C. history.
By coincidence, in today's outfit of the day photo on tumblr I am wearing a small, red plaid scarf that I borrowed from my mom. My mom said she's had it for ages and she wasn't kidding! Here's the tag on the scarf: It's a little hard to read but it says "Johnstons of Elgin made in Scotland for Woodward and Lothrop Washington." How history reveals itself!
Best,
Theresa
